Guide to Beginning an Exercise Program
The idea of beginning any type of workout session can be daunting, especially if you have not been big on exercise in the past. If you are unfamiliar with the idea of exercise you may wonder which type of exercise is best and how much you should do as well as how often.
Before you get started with any exercise regimen, no matter how mild it might happen to seem, you should always speak with your doctor first to make sure that you are physically able to participate. Even if you feel healthy, you may have some medical problems that would prevent you from safely participating in certain types of exercise, so it’s best to always check first.
Next, you should spend a little time designing an exercise program that will help you to meet your goals. If you are unfamiliar with exercise, this may sound difficult or daunting, but it’s really not. First, begin by outlining your goals. Ask yourself how soon you want to accomplish these goals, what is the timeframe? Now, determine which type of exercise will help you to best meet those goals within your specified timeframe. Do you think that aerobics, strength training or some other type of exercise would help you to best achieve your goals? Whether you want to lose weight, gain endurance or increase strength may shape your answers. Based on this information, you can then begin structuring your program.
Don’t be afraid to be detailed. How many times per week do you need to work out to meet your goals? How long do you need to work out in each session? Remember that you should start out slowly, regardless of which activity you choose, but set a goal of working your way up to at least thirty minutes per session.
Would it be best for you to work out in the morning, the evening or perhaps sometime during the middle of the day? If there is a gym near where you work the latter might be quite possible. Depending on which type of exercise you choose, you may be able to complete it on your own or you may need to work your schedule so that you can participate in a gym.
Finally don’t forget to ask yourself how you will measure your success. If you are planning to lose weight, this can be gauged by weighing or by measuring number of inches lost; however, if your goal is something else entirely, such as increasing endurance, you will need to find another measurement tool.
Remember that beginning an exercise program will take some dedication and commitment on your part. There are no easy methods or shortcuts. Preparation and planning; however, can help you to achieve your stated goals.
